Check Before Joining the Pileup #

An interesting station may appear on your receiver or a DX spotting service at a frequency where you cannot legally transmit. Other operators may have different license privileges or be operating under another country’s rules. Hearing a contact does not establish that you can join it on the same frequency.

Apply the bandwidth relationship from Section 7.3: the whole transmitted signal must fit within your authorized segment, not only the frequency shown on the display. When working split, check the transmit VFO as carefully as the receive VFO. For example, “up 5” tells you where the DX station is listening; it does not establish that the resulting transmit frequency and occupied bandwidth are available to your license class. That check belongs before the call, even when the pileup is moving quickly.
