Introduction #

Welcome to the HamStudy General Class License HamBook! Whether you’re ready to upgrade or still deciding what a General Class License could offer you, this book will help you understand the requirements and prepare for the exam.

To earn a General Class License, you must pass both the Technician and General exams. If you haven’t passed the Technician exam yet, start with the Technician HamBook. You can take both exams at the same session if you’re ready.

Amateur radio, often called “ham radio,” brings people together to communicate, experiment with radio and electronics, and help their communities. Some enjoy conversations over the air; others build equipment or support public events. Local clubs and other operators can help you find an activity to try.

While the Technician license offers many ways to communicate through VHF and UHF, the General Class License opens much more of the High Frequency (HF) bands. This is where you can talk around the globe without relying on internet-linked repeaters or satellites.

The World Awaits #

People work toward a General Class License for different reasons. You might want to:

  • Communicate directly with hams in other countries and continents.
  • Participate in worldwide contests and DXpeditions—trips to operate from places rarely heard on the air.
  • Experiment with digital modes on more HF bands.
  • Build and test your own antennas for long-distance communication.
  • Join emergency nets—organized groups communicating over the air—that span states or regions.
  • Learn more about radio equipment or become a Volunteer Examiner to help others get licensed.

What’s Inside #

This HamBook covers the US General Class (Element 3) exam pool valid from 2023 to 2027. You can find the latest version of the book at hambook.org. We focus on:

  • Deeper Technical Concepts: We build on your Technician knowledge to explain circuits, components, and signals in more detail.
  • HF Operating: Practical guidance for operating on the worldwide bands, including propagation, antenna tuning, and etiquette.
  • Regulations: The rules specific to General class privileges and HF operation.
  • Safety: Electrical and RF safety, including precautions for higher power levels and different station setups.
  • Question Reviews: Questions and answers from the actual exam pool, grouped with the topics that explain them.

Preparing for the Next Step #

Whether you’re looking to upgrade for emergency preparedness, the thrill of talking to a station in Antarctica, or the technical challenge of building a transceiver, this book is your guide.

Let’s look at what a General Class License makes possible and how to prepare for it.
