How to Use This HamBook #
Structure of the HamBook #
This HamBook is divided into two main parts:
Part 1: Expanding on Radio Science #
This part expands on Technician-level electrical and radio principles:
- Electrical Foundations: AC circuits, reactance, impedance, resonance, transformers, and power measurements.
- Components and Circuits: RF components, amplifiers, power supplies, and digital circuits.
- Signal Theory and Modulation: How radios create and receive signals, how modulation carries information, and how much bandwidth a signal uses.
- Advanced Antenna Systems: Feed lines, impedance matching, and common HF antenna designs.
- Understanding RF Propagation: How the atmosphere affects the path between stations.
Part 2: Expanding on Radio Operation #
This part covers the practical knowledge you’ll use with a General Class License:
- Safety: Electrical safety, RF exposure limits, and grounding practices essential for HF stations.
- Setting Up Your HF Station: Connecting equipment and learning to use its controls.
- Operating on the Air: Voice, CW, and digital contacts, DXing and contests, and emergency communications.
- Rules and Regulations: Rules for General Class privileges, emission types, and messages across borders.
Study Strategies #
Some readers want to pass the exam and learn more through operating; others prefer to understand each concept first. Both approaches work, and you can choose the one that fits your goals:
The “Build on Technician” Approach #
If you passed your Technician exam recently, much of the material will feel familiar. Focus on the new concepts introduced in each chapter, paying special attention to italicized text and Key Information boxes. Use the question review at the end of each section to connect the exam answers with what you’ve read. Follow its HamStudy link or QR code to test yourself before moving on.
The “Deep Dive” Approach #
For those who want a thorough understanding of radio theory and operation:
- Read each chapter completely.
- Take notes on new concepts, from circuits and antennas to HF propagation, and relate them to your interests.
- Use the HamStudy buttons or QR codes to reinforce your learning immediately.
- Engage with local elmers (mentors) or online communities to discuss challenging topics.
The “Exam Focused” Approach #
If your primary goal is passing the exam quickly:
- Skim the chapters to identify key terms and concepts, paying special attention to Key Information and anything in italics.
- Use HamStudy.org or the app in “Study Mode” alongside the book.
- Review the questions and answers in the book, then test yourself in HamStudy. Read the related explanations for concepts you find difficult or interesting.
- Track your progress using the app’s analytics features to target weak areas.
Working Through the Math #
Some math helps answer pool questions; some explains why a concept works. Brief bold notes mark extra math you can skim while keeping the concept in mind. If a calculation feels intimidating, keep reading and return to it later.
You can also memorize an exam answer or set a difficult calculation aside while studying other topics. You need 26 correct answers out of 35 to pass. Only one question comes from each pool group, so several related calculations may account for just one question on your exam.
Final Exam Preparation #
Once you’ve covered the material, use this study cycle:
- Use Study Mode until you’ve seen every question at least once.
- Take a practice exam to identify gaps.
- Use “Study Weakest Areas” in the app, or select the categories where you missed questions on the website. Read the related explanations here when you need them.
- Study those areas, then take another practice exam.
Consistently scoring 85% or better gives you a useful margin above the 26-out-of-35 passing score.
You can also keep this book as a reference after passing. Use the contents to return to a topic when it becomes useful in your station. You don’t have to become an expert in every part of the hobby before getting started.
Enhancing Your Study with HamStudy #
This book is designed to work seamlessly with HamStudy.org and the HamStudy mobile app. Use Study Mode and practice exams to test your knowledge as you read. The Open in HamStudy links and QR codes connect each section to its questions.
The website offers free question study and practice exams. The mobile app also lets you study offline.
Whether you’re aiming for a perfect score or just enough to pass, combining this book with HamStudy’s adaptive learning tools gives you a way to find weak areas and decide what to review next.
When you’re ready to take the exam, you’ll work with a volunteer examiner team. The next section explains how that process works.
