Welcome to Amateur Extra #
Welcome to the HamStudy Amateur Extra Class License HamBook! Perhaps you heard a rare station calling just below the General band edge, out of reach, and started thinking about an upgrade. You may also want to understand what happens inside your radio, improve a station, help others get licensed, or earn the highest license class. Whatever brought you here, let’s give those exam answers something to connect to.
This book builds on the knowledge tested by the Technician and General exams; you don’t need to be an electronics engineer or an expert operator. If you haven’t studied those yet, start with the corresponding HamBooks at hambook.org. You can take more than one exam at the same session if you’re ready; earning the higher license still requires credit for the lower exams.
You can use this book whether or not you’ve read either earlier HamBook. Brief refreshers connect familiar ideas to the new material, so you can build on what you’ve learned without starting over.
What’s Inside This Book #
The Extra exam reaches further into how radio works. We’ll cover:
- Circuits and components: How timing, stored energy, and component behavior shape a signal.
- Signals and receivers: How radios carry information, process it digitally, and separate wanted signals from noise.
- Antennas and propagation: How antenna systems direct energy and how signals travel between stations.
- Station work and operating: Safe installation, useful measurements, interference, satellites, weak-signal contacts, and more.
- Rules and exam questions: The responsibilities that come with your privileges, with the actual pool questions beside the topics that teach them.
HF operating is part of the story, but there’s plenty here for interests closer to home—or farther out, through satellites and moonbounce. You don’t have to pursue every activity to earn the license. As you study, some topics will be useful right away; others may give you an idea for something to try later.
This edition covers the US Amateur Extra question pool valid from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2028. Pools and rules change, so visit hambook.org for the latest version of the book.
