Preparing for the Upgrade #
To earn an Amateur Extra Class License, you need credit for all three exams: Technician (Element 2), General (Element 3), and Amateur Extra (Element 4). A current General Class License supplies the lower-element credit, so most readers will take only Element 4. If you still need a lower exam, prepare for it first; an exam team may offer multiple elements in one session.
Find Your Exam Team #
Volunteer Examiners administer amateur exams through a Volunteer Examiner Coordinator. You can find in-person and remote sessions at HamStudy.org/sessions, or ask a local club about upcoming sessions.
Read the team’s instructions before registering. Check the fee, accepted identification, calculator rules, and the license or exam-credit documents you’ll need. Remote exams also have room, camera, and computer requirements. Exam day is a poor time to discover that you need a second camera or a different calculator. Sort those details out early so you can focus on the questions.
Bring Your Existing FRN #
Use the FCC Registration Number (FRN) shown on your FCC license record when you register for the exam. The team needs that 10-digit number for your application; it stays with you when you upgrade, even if your call sign changes. Don’t create a second one.
If you’re preparing for your first license and don’t yet have an FRN, visit the FCC’s Commission Registration System (CORES), create an FCC username account, and follow the instructions to register a new individual FRN in your own name. Save that number for your exam registration.
Keep Your Exam Credit #
After you pass, the exam team gives you a Certificate of Successful Completion of Examination (CSCE) and submits your application through its coordinator. Keep the certificate and check that your FCC license record updates correctly.
An existing licensee who completes the upgrade requirements may use temporary Extra privileges under the CSCE rules before the FCC updates the license. When using those privileges, add /AE to your call sign. A first-time applicant must wait for the FCC license grant before transmitting as a control operator. Chapter 11 explains the conditions for exam credit and temporary operating privileges.
For now, start with one section and try its questions. Anything you miss gives you a useful place to look again.
