What is SWR? #
Imagine you’re throwing a ball against a wall. If you throw it just right, it comes right back to your hand. But if your timing is off, you might have to chase it. That’s kind of how SWR works in radio! SWR is essentially a report card for your antenna system. It tells you (at least in part) how well your radio, feed line, and antenna are working together.
In a perfect world, all the power from your radio would zip right up to your antenna and out into the ether. But we don’t live in a perfect world, do we? So, what exactly is SWR measuring? It’s the ratio of the maximum to minimum voltage along your feed line. Don’t worry, you don’t need to break out the calculus textbook—here’s the gist:
- 1:1 SWR: Perfect Match! It’s like hitting a home run, all your power is going where it should.
- Up to 1.5:1 SWR: Great! You’re still knocking it out of the park.
- 2:1 SWR: Meh. You’re fine, but not really impressing anybody.
- 3:1 or higher SWR: Your impedance does not match. Time to figure out what’s wrong.
Why Does SWR Matter? #
